Part 1 — How Tor Directory Floods Fetch and Wait

Version scope: Tor 0.4.9.14 with our custom metrics patch. Tor 0.4.9.15, released October 28, adds directory-request DoS controls, including per-circuit BEGIN_DIR rate limiting and an HSDir request limit. The measurements below describe 0.4.9.14, not the effect of those new controls.

Three patterns stand out across 29 measured flood periods on 23 relays. Here, “dominates” means more than half of a period’s streams; relays can appear in both groups.

Reading directory traffic #

A directory stream is a connection inside a Tor circuit used to request information from a relay’s directory service. BEGIN_DIR asks the relay to open that connection. The information includes Tor network documents and descriptors that help clients reach onion services. Our traffic-path diagram shows where directory requests fit.

An onion-service directory, or HSDir, stores service descriptors. Clients send HSDir fetch requests (GET) to retrieve them; services send HSDir upload requests (POST) to store them. The added metrics separate those operations from other directory activity. Our Tor Project GitLab proposal explains the case for improved request and outcome counters.

Three observed patterns #

1. Descriptor fetching dominates. Relay O (chart 1) recorded 14,526,740 fetches—99.8% of its counted streams. Uploads accounted for 26,651 requests (0.18%). Ten other relays also had fetch-majority periods.

2. HTTP-wait closures dominate. Relay T (chart 2) recorded 57,501,531 such closures—98.2% of its streams. Tor was still waiting for an HTTP request, with an empty input buffer and no earlier request classification. Parsing failures are counted separately. Thirteen other relays also had HTTP-wait-majority periods.

3. The majority type can change. Relay J (chart 3) recorded 99.8% fetches (27,345,592 requests) in the earlier period. In the later period, 72.0% were HTTP-wait closures (22,764,459 streams). One other relay, N, also changed majority category.
